In a global landscape defined by shifting alliances, social media activism, and rising misinformation, the need for articulate, well-informed advocates has never been greater. Responding to this challenge, Taglit Birthright Israel, in collaboration with Reichman University and with generous support from the Alfred Landecker Foundation, has launched a pioneering new initiative: the Geopolitics and Public Diplomacy Fellowship.
This unique programme is designed to empower young Jewish leaders with the knowledge and skills necessary to navigate complex international realities, advocate effectively for Israel, and engage in meaningful, values-based diplomacy.
A Transformational Learning Experience
Over the course of four intensive weeks, sixteen participants from around the globe came together in Israel to explore the region’s most pressing geopolitical questions. The Fellowship blended academic learning with experiential education, providing fellows with access to leading scholars, security experts, and communication strategists.
Topics covered included the dynamics of Israel’s conflicts, Jewish identity in a modern world, counterterrorism strategy, and the evolving role of social media in global activism. These sessions offered participants the tools to think critically, engage confidently, and respond thoughtfully to the narratives surrounding Israel on the world stage.
Learning Through First-Hand Encounters
Beyond the classroom, the programme placed a strong emphasis on real-world experience. Participants travelled to areas such as the Gaza Envelope and Israel’s northern border communities — regions deeply affected by geopolitical tensions and security challenges.
One of the programme’s most powerful components was the opportunity to engage with Israeli peers who balance academic life with active military service. These personal conversations helped demystify Israeli society, fostering deeper understanding and empathy.
Through these encounters, participants saw Israel not just as a subject of debate, but as a living, complex, and human country.
From Knowledge to Action
The Fellowship did more than educate — it trained young leaders to act. Through advocacy workshops and crisis communication simulations, fellows built practical skills to counter disinformation, lead constructive conversations, and advocate for Israel with clarity and compassion.
The culmination of the programme saw participants present innovative final projects — from social media campaigns to grassroots initiatives — all aimed at countering antisemitism and strengthening community cohesion.
The growth in confidence was palpable. As one participant reflected, “This programme gave me the education, the tools, and the belief to speak up for Israel — even in the toughest conversations.”
Looking Ahead: Growing a Global Movement
The success of the Fellowship has reinforced Taglit’s belief in the power of informed, passionate young people. With plans to expand the programme to 25 participants in 2025, Taglit continues to invest in future Jewish leadership, ensuring that Israel’s story is told by voices that are authentic, courageous, and well-prepared.
As the geopolitical environment becomes more complex, this Fellowship stands as a beacon of clarity and hope — shaping not only the advocates of tomorrow, but the global conversations of today.
