What happens when a group of bright, globally minded Jewish leaders, lands in Brazil for a week of exploration, learning, and cultural immersion? You get a journey that’s not only unforgettable – it’s transformative.
From April 21 to 25, thirteen fellows from the prestigious Birthright Israel Excel program traveled from countries like the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Ukraine, Russia, and Spain to immerse themselves in the Jewish life of São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. What they found was a vibrant, deeply rooted community – and an experience that will stay with them forever.
Stepping Into History
The week began with powerful encounters with Brazil’s Jewish past. At the Memorial of Jewish Immigration and the Holocaust, the fellows explored a moving tribute to those who sought refuge in Brazil and to the victims of the Shoah. The experience offered not just historical context, but also space for personal reflection.
At the Jewish Museum of São Paulo, they delved into the stories of how Jewish life in Brazil has evolved – a rich tapestry of cultural, religious, and social traditions that continues to flourish today.
Meeting the Soul of the Community
Beyond the museums, the fellows witnessed how Jewish values come to life in action. At Ten Yad, a nonprofit supporting people in vulnerable situations, they saw compassion and dignity in motion. And at Unibes Cultural, the Anne Frank exhibition reminded them of the dangers of intolerance and the importance of historical memory.
But perhaps the most profound moments happened at A Hebraica Club in São Paulo, where a series of meaningful encounters brought diverse voices together:
- Atilla Kus, a Muslim Turkish from Kurdish origin peace advocate and Ariel Krok spoke about the power of interfaith connection. Their stories – including Brazil’s Abrahamic Hummus Championship a unique interfaith event worldwide – illustrated how curiosity, respect, and humor can be tools for unity.
- Rafael Zimmerman, a survivor of the Nova Festival terrorist attack on October 7, 2023, shared his harrowing and inspiring story of survival, leaving few dry eyes in the room.
- A meeting with a Holocaust survivor brought living memory into sharp focus, offering a moving reminder of why bearing witness matters.
- And a closing lecture on interfaith dialogue showed how Muslims, Christians, and Jews in Brazil are working together to build bridges rooted in empathy and shared humanity.
Warmth, Hospitality, and Big Conversations
The Brazilian Jewish community didn’t just open its institutions – it opened its homes. Fellows were welcomed with warmth and generosity by local leaders who hosted intimate gatherings filled with meaningful discussion.
At the home of Eduardo and Liora Alkalay, conversations flowed over dinner – touching on Jewish identity, global philanthropy, and the power of community. Later, Salim and Ariela Mansur welcomed the group for a stimulating panel with André Lajst and Henri Ozi Cukier, who tackled timely issues facing Jewish communities around the world and emphasized the importance of collective responsibility.
A Week That Sparked a Lifetime of Connection
This was far more than a tour. It was a heartfelt exchange – a weaving together of stories, values, and aspirations. The Excel fellows didn’t just learn about Brazilian Jewry; they became part of it. They forged bonds rooted in shared identity, empathy, and a sense of purpose that transcends borders.
To everyone who made this journey possible – the hosts, speakers, partners, and families who welcomed us so warmly – thank you. Your generosity and spirit inspired our fellows and strengthened a global network of Jewish leadership.
This week in Brazil was a testament to what happens when Jewish communities come together: we remember, we learn, and most importantly, we build the future – together.
