Taglit Birthright Israel’s Inaugural Solidarity Mission

Thu 7 Dec 2023

Solidarity mission

Taglit Birthright Israel’s inaugural solidarity mission unfolded in early November, for the first time uniting 18 community leaders and supporters from Taglit Birthright Israel from across six nations: the United States, France, Mexico, Uruguay, Canada, Italy together with our Israeli supporters. This transformative mission served as a profound exploration, immersing participants in powerful experiences that profoundly strengthened their connection to Taglit and to the remarkable land of Israel.

During this impactful three-day mission, attendees engaged in enlightening lectures about the current situation and the October 7th atrocities. They were privileged to hear insights and plans for the immediate future from notable figures such as General (res.) Amos Yadlin and Yogev Gradus, the director of budgets at the Ministry, among others.

The delegation had the opportunity to meet with Rachel and Jon Goldberg-Polin, the parents of Hersh Goldberg-Polin, who are tirelessly advocating for the return of their son and the 240 abductees in Gaza (note: the number has since decreased to 140 due to successful hostage releases). Additionally, they connected with evacuees from Ma’agalim and Givolim, who expressed their gratitude for Taglit Birthright Israel’s initiative, which provides a respite from conflict for those residing just beyond the government aid line. A meaningful lunch was shared with soldiers, Taglit Birthright Israel alumni, living in evacuated communities.

The mission visited the Gaza envelope, where participants engaged with popular broadcaster Danny Kushmaro, gaining insight into his experiences broadcasting a war as it unfolded and balancing the need to convey the severity of events without traumatizing the public or succumbing to emotional strain. A visit to Kibbutz Kfar Aza revealed the stark realities of the severe destruction. The delegation also met with Mayor Alon Davidi of Sderot, who shared his vision for the city’s future and highlighted Taglit’s potential role in its rebuilding efforts.

Thank you to Dr. Miriam Adelson and to Leon Koffler for graciously hosting the mission participants in their homes.

Gidi Mark, the CEO of Taglit Birthright Israel, reflected on the mission’s impact, stating, “These moments have showcased the strength of the human spirit, the significance of unity, and the potency of solidarity. Our mission members are more dedicated than ever to supporting Taglit, our Jewish community and our homeland, Israel. Together, we can make a difference.”

When young Jews fall in love with Israel and its people, our future can be transformed.
